Women’s education is central to social justice, economic development, and democratic participation in India. Over recent decades, the country has achieved substantial progress in female enrolment, literacy, retention, and access to higher education through constitutional guarantees, public programmes, scholarships, and changing social attitudes. Education has strengthened women’s awareness of rights, employability, decision-making capacity, health outcomes, and participation in community and national development. Significant inequalities persist across rural and urban areas, social groups, income levels, regions, and stages of education. Poverty, early marriage, gender-based violence, safety concerns, inadequate sanitation, digital exclusion, domestic responsibilities, and discriminatory norms continue to restrict educational opportunities and empowerment. The major achievements, continuing barriers, and the relationship between education and women’s agency in India. It argues that future progress requires coordinated action by government, educational institutions, families, communities, and civil society to ensure equitable, safe, inclusive, and employment-oriented learning opportunities for every Indian woman.
