Abstract:
The short stories of Harishankar Jaladas occupy a unique and revolutionary space in contemporary Bengali literature. While mainstream Bengali short fiction has long been dominated by the psychological complexities of the middle class and conventional rural narratives, Jaladas breaks new ground by bringing the lives of the most marginalized, subaltern, and untouchable communities to the forefront. His narrative world primarily revolves around the fisherfolk (Dhibor) of the coastal regions, the sweepers (Harijan) of urban colonies, and the socially ostracized sex workers living in the dark alleys of forbidden quarters.
The defining strength of Jaladas’s short stories lies in his authentic lived experience and deeply empathetic observation. Having risen from the depths of a marginalized community himself, his portrayals are entirely free from superficial drawing-room imagination or patronizing sympathy. He captures the raw reality of survival— soaked in the salty sweat of the sea, the stench of the sweeper colonies and the silent sighs of the dispossessed.
Crucially, the subaltern characters in his short stories are not depicted merely as passive victims of social injustice or upper-caste hegemony; instead, they emerge as resilient individuals driven by a profound sense of dignity, love, and rebellion. Written in a powerful, unpolished, and linguistically rich regional dialect, his stories expose institutional exploitation while celebrating the indomitable human spirit. Ultimately, Harishankar Jaladas’s short fiction expands the horizons of the Bengali short story, offering a powerful testament to human rights, dignity, and literary social responsibility.
