Abstract:
Adolescent mental health has emerged as a critical public health concern due to increasing academic pressure, socio-economic challenges, and rapid social change. Depression, anxiety, and stress significantly influence adolescents’ emotional well-being, academic performance, and social adjustment. The present study aims to examine and compare the levels of depression, anxiety, and stress among adolescent students in two eastern Indian states—West Bengal and Tripura. Using a comparative and descriptive research design, data were collected from school-going adolescents through a standardized psychological scale. The findings reveal noticeable regional variations in mental health outcomes, with adolescents from Tripura reporting comparatively higher levels of depression and anxiety than those from West Bengal, while stress levels were found to be relatively similar. The study highlights the role of regional, cultural, and socio-economic factors in shaping adolescent mental health and emphasizes the need for state-specific mental health interventions, school-based counseling services, and early identification strategies. The results contribute to the growing body of literature on adolescent mental health in India and offer practical implications for educators, mental health professionals, and policymakers.
