Abstract:

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 represents one of the most comprehensive reforms in the Indian education system since independence. Recognizing teachers as the cornerstone of educational transformation, the policy places significant emphasis on restructuring teacher education, enhancing professional standards, and aligning pedagogical practices with the demands of the twenty-first century. Teacher education in India has historically faced several challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, fragmented institutional frameworks, outdated curricula, limited research orientation, and disparities in quality across regions. NEP 2020 seeks to address these issues through a holistic and multidisciplinary approach that integrates technology, competency-based learning, continuous professional development, and a four-year integrated teacher
education program. This paper critically examines the opportunities and challenges presented by NEP 2020 in the context of teacher education in India. It explores key policy provisions related to teacher preparation, institutional reforms, professional standards, digital integration, and inclusivity. The study highlights the transformative potential of NEP 2020 in improving teacher quality, promoting innovation, strengthening teacher autonomy, and fostering equitable access to education. Simultaneously, it identifies major implementation challenges, including resource constraints, digital divides, institutional resistance, faculty shortages, and disparities between urban and rural educational settings. The paper argues that the successful realization of NEP 2020 depends not merely on policy design but on effective implementation, sustained investment, and collaborative engagement among stakeholders. It concludes that while NEP 2020 offers unprecedented opportunities to redefine teacher education in India, overcoming structural and systemic barriers remains essential for achieving its vision of an inclusive, equitable, and high-quality education system.
